I don’t necessarily want to say I have fallen off the wagon, but it is safe to probably describe my current relationship with food by painting a vivid word-picture of myself dangling from said wagon by one arm, feet dragging on the ground… about to fall off. ūüôā

Bad habits have slowly started creeping back into my busy lifestyle. Snacking on things I would not have touched a year ago. Sips of soda, bites of gluten-containing foods, and the sugar. Oh the sugar.

Needless to say I need a reset.

I’ll be honest, I’ve needed one for about a year. And I am pretty lucky to be able to say have not gained all that much considering I’ve completely stopped counting calories or macros. The¬†jeans I was wearing before my¬†wedding are the same jeans I am wearing today (albeit a bit more snug these days).¬†Thanks to all the hard training I’ve been doing over the year to be able to complete 11 Spartan Races, I have been able to “maintain” a relatively level body weight. But I could still stand to lose that weight, and most importantly, I am not happy with how I FEEL on the inside. If the outside were to harden up a little bit more… well, I wouldn’t complain one bit. Cue, WHOLE30.

Another trainer I know at my gym did the WHOLE30 earlier this year and had nothing but positives to say about it. Yes, I will be eliminating a lot of foods from my diet. Yes, it’s going to be a challenge. But that’s just it, thats what I NEED. Challenge. There is no “lifestyle change” of any kind that will ever be easy, unless it’s reverting back to unhealthy ones, and nobody wants that.

So here I am, preparing for the WHOLE30. I will be clearing out my pantry of all things BAD, and tossing them. And eventually, I will fill my fridge and cupboards with all approved whole foods. I am planning on doing this with a friend, so I am not alone in the hangry-ness and sugar withdrawals. But I think this might be one of the best ways to “ring in the new year” I can think of.

I know, how clich√© of me, starting a diet on January 1st. Actually though, I am going to try to start it a little earlier, before the holidays so I can get used to the challenges of resisting temptation during one of the most tempting times of the year. I know I will slip, especially on Christmas day with all the goodies and things, but practice makes perfect.¬†¬†I’m looking at it this way: December is when I start walking, January is when I hit the ground running!

Hows that for a metaphor? ūüôā

I am going to document this experience as best I can here. Posting photos of my meals and struggles and successes, if anything to be able to look back if I ever decide to do this again.

A Grand Return

I’m BACK!!!!

That was quite the hiatus wasn’t it?

Well, A LOT has been going on since my last post. I’ve completed the Hawaii Spartan Trifecta, The Tahoe World Championships BEAST, another SoCal Beast and have also taken on teaching 2 additional circuit training classes at a new gym. Life has been busy busy busy. I want to be able to take moments like these to settle down and reflect, and share some of the stuff I get to experience every week… I hope I can do that again. So here I am…. trying.

Today started out pretty normal. Taught my circuit training class this morning at 6am, and actually changed the workout up this time around and did the workout with them. It was actually kind of nice doing that, I think it helps the class members stay motivated to keep moving. I might try this new method a couple more times to see how everyone responds.

Tonight I have a photo shoot in Ojai. In the last couple of months, I’ve been getting a lot of inquiries about doing maternity photography and newborn photography. I don’t necessarily advertise myself as that sort of photographer, but somehow people are finding me and asking me to do it. Extra money right? (Though all this “extra work” is starting to take over all my free time)

After my photo shoot tonight I am subbing another class at this new gym, then I have to jet home and make a batch of pumpkin squares for tomorrow’s potluck at work.

Dave and I¬†are only a week and a few days away from our biggest race weekend of the year. The Hawaii Trifecta weekend. A 13 mile Beast on Saturday, then an 8 mile Super and a 3 mile Sprint on Sunday. This is going to be intense. Training has kind of taken over our lives and I haven’t really been able to focus on much else during this time – which explains why I’ve been MIA here. Hoping that will change soon.

Part of me feels so incredibly ready for this race, like I’ve been ready since the middle of July when we raced the AT&T Spartan Stadium Sprint and I felt absolutely amazing through the entire race and only missed 2 obstacles. (once again, damn that spear throw)

Despite all our training and confidence, there is also a part of me that doesn’t feel 100% ready. I am still struggling with some health issues that have really inhibited my running, and I haven’t been running the trails the way I should. I’ve substituted the absence of my running capability with spinning and other cardio methods that will at least up¬†my endurance – but my hill-climbing muscles are going to be put to the ultimate test in Hawaii and I’m afraid they won’t be able to perform how I want them to. AKA – I’m terrified of cramping up on the race.

Other than those concerns, mentally I think we are both ready, and won’t have an issue with finishing. We’ve progressed up to a few three-a-day workouts focusing on strength, cardio, then skills – and have been training in the heat of summer that California has been offering us. The humidity and heat combo down here in SoCal has been no joke, but we took full advantage of it and trained in it to get ready for the same kind of weather in Hawaii. It’s been exhausting but really beneficial. I am ready to take on this epic challenge…. and then relax for a week on the beach. YESSSSSSSSS.

My goals for these 3 races are mainly to FINISH. As I continue to race these Spartan races, I do want to improve my times, and improve my performance on the obstacles, but I’ve never done three tough races over the course of¬†two¬†days, especially in a climate like this, so Dave and I have made a game plan to pace ourselves and focus on completing the courses safely and efficiently. No need to push ourselves beyond reasonable measures. Hydration, completing obstacles safely, and pacing ourselves is the goal. We have more races in the Fall where we can focus on faster completion times, and possibly competing in the Elite division.

It’s hard to believe how quickly this year has gone by. Seriously how is it already August?¬†One more week of intense training, then a taper week… then the race is here. Here we go.
